D8 vs D8+ Stage Hoists Explained

According to IGVW SQP2, a D8 hoist may not hold or move loads over people without additional safety measures, while a D8+ (D8 Plus) hoist is designed to hold loads over people while at rest without a secondary safety device – but no one may be under the load while it moves. The Dingyou DY+ stage hoist is designed to D8+ principles; for overhead use, specify the dual-brake option.

Where the classifications come from

The D8, D8+ and C1 classes are described in IGVW SQP2 (status 03/2024), published by the IGVW. SQP2 originates from the German regulations DGUV Vorschrift 17/18 for event and production venues, and the classes are widely used in entertainment rigging specifications.

What does D8 mean?

A D8 hoist may not hold or move loads over people without additional safety measures – for example secondary suspension such as safety steels, set up before anyone goes under the load.

What does D8+ mean?

A D8+ hoist is designed to hold loads over people while at rest, without a secondary safety device. No one may be under the load while it is moving. SQP2 describes two ways to meet D8+:

  1. D8 hoist plus a second brake, derated – a D8 hoist fitted with a second brake and derated to half its capacity.
  2. Purpose-designed hoist – a hoist whose load path is dimensioned for at least 2× rated capacity at rest, with an 8:1 chain operating coefficient.

What does C1 mean?

A C1 hoist complies with DIN EN 17206 and can hold and move loads over people. The requirements – second brake, double limit switches, overload shutdown and suitable controls – apply at system level and are set by risk assessment.

Comparison table

D8 D8+ C1
Hold load over people at rest Only with additional safety measures Yes, without secondary safety device Yes
Move load over people No No Yes
How it is met Base class D8 + second brake, derated to 50%; or load path ≥ 2× rated at rest with 8:1 chain coefficient DIN EN 17206; system-level requirements set by risk assessment

How the Dingyou DY+ fits

DY+ is designed to D8+ principles: chain with an 8:1 safety factor, load path dimensioned for overhead holding, and an optional dual brake for single-fault tolerance. For overhead (D8+) use, specify the dual-brake option and confirm requirements with your rigging plan and local regulations.

From the 2026 catalogue (p. 19):

Brake configuration Brakes Intended use
DY+ standard One independent electromagnetic brake General lifting; not for holding loads over people without additional safety measures
DY+ with dual-brake option Two electromagnetic brakes (single-fault tolerance) Specify for overhead (D8+) use, confirmed against your rigging plan and local regulations

Is DY+ certified to D8+?

No. The DY+ holds a TÜV Rheinland LGA certificate under the EC Machinery Directive and a UDEM attestation for the Machinery and EMC directives (see Certifications & Compliance). These are not D8+ certifications.

What about C1 and servo hoists?

Dingyou’s servo CNC hoist has dual electromagnetic brakes independent of the motor, a 10× chain safety factor, four-point multifunction limits (overtravel, anti-collision with the top and position zeroing) and optional load sensing. These features suit C1-type system designs, subject to the system’s risk assessment. For control, see hoist controllers.

Frequently asked questions

Is DY+ certified to D8+?

No. DY+ certificates cover the EC Machinery and EMC directives. DY+ is designed to D8+ principles; for overhead (D8+) use, specify the dual-brake option and confirm requirements with your rigging plan and local regulations.

Can I hold a load over people with the standard single-brake DY+?

Specify the dual-brake option for overhead (D8+) use, and confirm the requirements with your rigging plan and local regulations.

Can a D8+ hoist move a load over people?

No. Under SQP2, no one may be under a D8+ load while it moves. Moving loads over people requires a C1 system.

Can I use a D8 hoist over people?

Only with additional safety measures, such as secondary suspension.

Does D8+ mean the whole installation is safe?

No. The classification describes the hoist. The rigging, controller and installation need their own review.
